Milan, April 27th, 2020 - The Prada Group is providing financial support to PROTEGGIMI, a project run by the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan that will investigate why COVID-19 affects men more severely than women, accounting for 66% of deaths in Italy and 82% of intensive care admissions in Lombardy. Sex hormones, and testosterone in particular, could explain this disparity, at least in part.
The project is coordinated by Prof. Andrea Salonia, director of the Urological Research Institute and a full professor and member of the Interfaculty Centre for Gender Studies at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. He said: “Being able to examine separate clinical data for men and women is crucial if we are to understand whether testosterone levels are linked to the severity of the illness, and to assess any long-term impacts on the endocrinal and overall health of men who have recovered from it”.
