MIU MIU WOMEN'S TALES #16: THE WEDDING SINGER'S DAUGHTER

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1980s. Nighttime. Women shrouded in traditional black abayas make their way into a wedding hall. There, they reveal glittery and glamorous heels, dazzling dresses and wild hair. Their true selves set free, unseen by male gaze. All eyes and ears are on the wedding singer, until the electricity cuts out suddenly…

This is the beginning of The Wedding Singer’s Daughter, the 16th commission from Miu Miu Women’s Tales directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour - considered the first female Saudi filmmaker (Wadjda, the first ever foreign-language Oscar entry from Saudi Arabia) -, and previewed at the Venice Film Festival’s Giornate degli Autori yesterday September 2nd, 2018.

The singer’s young daughter is the heroine of this story, between joyful and suspense moments.

She acts out of the box, ignoring the others’ scornful judgment. She represents the future, and the future belongs to outsiders.
