A Prada outfit from the Spring/Summer 2016 women’s collection can be seen at SMUK, an exhibition at the Modemuseum in Hasselt (Belgium) of historic and contemporary decorative techniques used in haute couture. The exhibition explains how the various techniques developed and how technological progress made embroidered fabrics accessible to ever-larger numbers of people. It also showcases designers that use decoration in an original and innovative way, from Diderot and d’Alembert’s eighteenth-century Encyclopédie – in which the two intellectuals described professions like the brodeur (embroiderer) and the rubanier (ribbon-maker) – through to the present day.
