THE OCEAN DECADE

The United Nations declared 2021-2030 the “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development”: ten years dedicated to the ocean and the protection of the sea and its health.

The goal is to build a common research and technological innovation programme to commit the scientific community, governments, the private sector and civil society to preserve a clean and healthy ocean.

Ten years will be dedicated to understanding the vital importance of the sea for our Planet, to build an Ocean Generation fully aware of its value.

On December 16, 2020, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission launched the Manifesto of the Decade of the Sea in Italy. The Prada Group, already committed to the education of future generations through the SEA BEYOND project, decided to support the initiative, becoming one of the first signatories of the Manifesto.

The 10 challenges of the Ocean Decade

The 10 challenges represent the most immediate and urgent priorities for the Ocean Decade, aiming to unite the Decade partners in collective action on a global, regional, national and local scale, and will contribute to achieving the results of the Ocean Decade.

THE OCEAN WE WANT

The mission of the Ocean Decade is “to catalyse transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean”.

Seven outcomes describe the “Ocean we want” at the end of the Ocean Decade:

1. A CLEAN OCEAN

where sources of pollution are identified and reduced or removed

2. A HEALTHY AND RESILIENT OCEAN

where marine ecosystems are understood, protected, restored and managed

3. A PRODUCTIVE OCEAN

supporting sustainable food supply and a sustainable ocean economy

4. A PREDICTED OCEAN

where society understands and can respond to changing ocean conditions

5. A SAFE OCEAN

where life and livelihoods are protected from ocean-related hazards

6. AN ACCESSIBLE OCEAN

with open and equitable access to data, information technology and innovation

7.  AN INSPIRING AND ENGAGING OCEAN

where society understands and values the ocean in relation to human wellbeing and sustainable development
